There are a lot of great things about libraries in general, and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh specifically. So, in no particular order, I thought I’d share a few great things that are on my mind right now:
- We get new books fast. Sometimes, you can even get it faster here than at the bookstore. Case in point: I just read Neil Gaiman’s new book The Graveyard Book which, according to Neil’s blog, can be tough to find in some bookstores. Especially in Australia. Although I’m not in Australia, and you’re probably not either, but anyway — I got it from the library and it was fantastic.
- We have video games. I recently bought a Wii for myself, and you know how I’ve decided what games to buy? I tried them out at the library. Almost every library has Get Your Game On! programs at least once a month, and soon we’ll have even more games for you to play.
- We give teens opportunities to help out. Things like Tell-A-Tale Theater, a group of teen volunteers who put on monthly storytime/craft/skit programs for little kids. If you’re interested in learning more, come to CLP – Main, Teen on Saturday, 10/25 at 2:00pm for a meeting. Want to know more about volunteering at the library? Go here.
- We have awesome, amazing, spectacular and fantabulous programs. Like Behind the Book: Authors Talk to Teens. And as part of Behind the Book, CLP will be hosting a stop on the Nerdfighters World Tour, bringing John Green, his brother Hank, and their Secret Sister Maureen Johnson to our fair city. That happens on November 13th from 6:00 – 9:00pm in the Museum of Art Theater (it’s attached to the Main Library at 4400 Forbes Ave) and it will be AWESOME.
So, those are just a few reasons why I love the library. How about you?
