Royal Wedding-O-Rama… or Overkill?

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is full steam ahead, with only eight days until the big event. As I was surfing the web today, I came across some interesting “memorabilia” to celebrate their marriage. Allow me to post some of them here…

Is that a delicious Papa John’s pizza sporting the kissers of the royal duo, you ask? Indeedy, it is. The generous UK branch of Papa John’s even offered to sell the priceless piece to a customer.

Not only is the tacky knick-knack industry abuzz with the sound of wedding bells, but way on this side of the Atlantic, Pittsburghers and Americans in general are gearing up for the celebation of a lifetime. Friends are getting together and preparing proper English breakfasts of tea and scones, cuddling up with blankets to watch the big day. The Fire Escape Coffee House in Ben Avon is hosting a high tea from 1-3pm, serving tea and scones with clotted cream and jam. Trump Tower in NYC is hosting a black tie brunch for the event, bars and pubs will stay open all night, rolling out champagne bottle after champagne bottle, to ring in the early hours of wedding day bliss, even The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is participating by hosting a Royal Wedding Reception, featuring a royal look-alike contest, for a mere $500/$250/$100  per ticket price.

It is expected that nearly 2 billion people will tune in to watch the exchange of rings. Every worldwide network will cover the event for hours upon hours next Friday and we will, no doubt, be over-exposed to this circus wedding whether we want to be or not.

All of this begs the question, why are so many Americans obsessing over a wedding that has nothing to do with us? Is it simply that a Disney movie is finally becoming reality? Its not every day that a commoner gets to marry a royal prince. Is is that, deep-down, we are all Anglophiles at heart– entranced by British life, culture, and society?  Is it simply that we are obsessed with pop-culture and the lives of the rich and famous?

I wish I could answer that question, or even say that I hold myself above all of it. But alas, I will be there, zombie-ing out in front of my TV next Friday waiting to see the wedding gown, the hair styles, and the ridiculous hats that go with the territory of a royal wedding.

Any thoughts?
