August in Hazelwood

On Friday, August 8th, at 2:00 pm, we will be making beaded jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, and anklets. You can also make jangly tassels for purses and backpacks, if you wish. Join us on Thursday, August 14th for some PS2 games. If I know us, it will probably be Dragonball.

I don’t have the most jam-packed teen events schedule this month, but I’m always here recommending books, taking MySpace pics, and answering the questions that plague teen minds. Yesterday’s question: what is the origin of the fairy tale Alice in Wonderland? He wrote it on LSD, didn’t he? Answer: First off, Alice in Wonderland isn’t really a fairy tale by most definitions. Most of the stories we consider fairy tales were written before 1865 (the year of Alice in Wonderland’s publication). It was devised as a great example of the literary nonsense genre and spurred the creation of many subsequent works of fantasy. Second, it would have been difficult for Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland on LSD since LSD was not invented until 1938. And now you know! Teens, stop in and see me if you have any other research questions. Remember, research isn’t always academic. It can be personal (and fun). Like the other day when we looked up various cryptids (including the truely terrifying Australian Bunyip).
