Februrary is Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, here are 10 facts, from biography.com, complete with links to your library catalog!

Black History Month got it’s beginnings in 1926, and was originally called Negro History Week.

February was chosen to honor black history, because it is the birth month of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

In 1958, Martin Luther King Jr. was stabbed, during his book signing at a department store,  by an African American woman.

The banjo originated in Africa and, until the 1800s, was considered an instrument only played by African Americans.

The famous Lewis and Clark were accompanied by York, an African American slave, from Missouri to Oregon, and he helped them interact with the Native Americans they came across.

Nancy Green, AKA Aunt Jemima, died in 1923 after being struck by a car in Chicago.

The first African American heavy weight champion, Jack Johnson, patented a wrench in 1922.

As of 2005, there were 2.4 million African American military veterans, the highest of any minority.

Famous Amos” started his cookie company in 1975 with his Aunt’s recipe.

The Buffalo Soldier, Mark Matthews, died at the age of 111 in 2005.
