Urban Agriculture in the ‘Burgh

Do you know where your food comes from? Food production in the United States is a messy, wasteful, and overly complicated process. The end result is usually ridiculously unhealthy. Just read The Omnivore’s Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat or watch the documentary Food, Inc. for all the scary details.  

Luckily, there is a very simple solution to America’s food woes: urban farming.  

Urban farming means growing food and raising livestock within the confines of a city. According to this pamphlet from the Community Food Security Coalition (CFSC), urban farming promotes healthy eating, exercise, and even reduces stress (both on the environment and on YOU). Urban farming is an awesome way to make a huge difference in your yourself, your community, and your world.

Another way to grow food in the city is participate in a community garden, and we have a lot of them here in Pittsburgh (check out the full list here). For a low fee (usually something like $30 per growing season) you can rent a plot in the community garden and grow all your favorite veggies to take home to eat. 

But even if you live in a tiny apartment you can still be an urban farmer by growing food on a balcony, porch, rooftop, windowsill, or Aerogarden (my personal favorite).  

Do you have a black thumb, or just don’t have the time and space to grow your own food? There are still plenty of ways to support local agriculture. See if you can participate in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program or buy some fruit and veggies from one of Pittsburgh’s many Farmer’s Markets.
