Summer Songs, Past and Present

You know what’s on the way?  Summer!  You know what’s great about summer?  MUSIC.  For as long as pop music has dominated our ears, summer has been the time to listen to more music.  So I’ve scoured the Internet for the best summer songs from the past 50 years or so.  Enjoy!  (Or, if you don’t enjoy, leave us your favs in the comments.)

See the videos after the jump –

Sealed with a Kiss by Brian Hyland –  This somewhat mopey summer song was a hit in 1962.

Heat Wave by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas – Now… there’s something a bit more uplifting! Motown at it’s best – go ahead, girl!

Free Bird by Lynrd Skynrd – Got an afternoon?  That’s about how long it takes to listen to this homage to the guitar.

In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry – Yes, this band’s name is Mungo Jerry.  The 1970’s were just weird all around, okay?

The Message by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five – This was all over the airways in the summer of 1982, one of the first rap songs to reach the mainstream.

I’ve Had the Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes – From Dirty Dancing, one of the biggest summer movies of the 1980’s (even though it was about the 1960’s).  Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

Summertime by The Sundays – Is this the best summer song ever, “or have I read too much fiction?”

Steal My Sunshine by Len– Absurdly catchy, this song mentions slurpies and “tribal lunar-speak.”  And the video features Canadians hanging out on the beach.

Crazy In Love by Beyoncé – When this song came out in summer of 2003, it upped the ante.

Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani – Everything about Gwen Stefani seems summery to me.

????  What will you be listening to this summer?
