Teen review: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

My name is Jenna. I go to a high school where I’m part of the marching band and the cheerleading squad. I’m pretty busy, but I always find time to read. I’m also very creative and I like doing little crafts out of random things I find.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This novel, “Across the Universe”, will surprise you in every way. When you first read the description of the book, you would think it’s just a typical sci-fi book, but it’s not! It’s a sci-fi, romance, mystery, drama-filled novel; and all of those genres blend together beautifully.

The two main characters are Elder and Amy, and they couldn’t be any more different. Amy and her family made the decision to board what they thought was called “Project Ark Ship”, a spaceship that will travel to another planet. The problem is, it won’t land for 300 years, so Amy and her mother and father were cryogenically frozen, and will be unfrozen when the ship lands on the new planet.

But, Amy was unfrozen early. Way too early. Early enough that someone tried to kill her by unplugging her and leaving her to die. And that’s when she met Elder.

Elder is the youngest boy on the ship right now. He never knew about the frozen people aboard the ship until he came across the original diagram of the ship and saw that level of the frozens. He was automatically interested in Amy, she was the only thing different on the ship. All of the people on the ship were the same; olive skin, dark hair, and brown eyes.

Amy had pale skin with red hair. She was from Earth, or as the people on the ship call it, Centauri-Earth.

Amy learned a whole lot once she woke up. The one thing she realized was that this ship was fueled by lies. She learned that there was someone trying to kill a bunch of the frozen people, that Elder is the next leader of the ship, that all of the people on the ship that were “crazy” and “mental” were actually the sane ones, and the “normal” people had no emotions and no feelings. She learned that there was something called the “Season” where all the people mated at the same time.

And she also found out there was something called the Plague that happened to the people of the ship, where hundreds of people died at the same time.

All of these things that Amy learned intrigued her. Everything seemed so odd and she knew there was a story behind it.

Elder and Amy together learn more about the ship that they never knew. Together, they uncover the millions of secrets and lies that Eldest, the leader of the ship, has told to them and the people as a whole. The lies and secrets will be uncovered all the way to the very end of the book. Be prepared to be surprised multiple times in this novel!

This book should be read by ALL teens, even if you don’t like “sci-fi” books because it is much more than that. The story had so much detail in it, you understood everything, even if some of the concepts might be foreign to you at first. This was a great book, and I hope there is a sequel to it!
