Teen Underground Cafe Is Back–and Bigger Than Ever!

image003

Teen Underground Cafe, an after-hours performance & arts program for teens, is coming–and it wants your participation!

Through Teen Underground Cafe, we hope to turn Libraries all over the city into after hours showcases of teen talent. As one part, we will soon be scheduling eight Teen Underground Cafe Presents… at the Main Library (in Oakland), in which we’ll be looking for teens to fill two slots of 30-40 minutes of material of all kinds–music, poetry, improv, you name it–as well as one teen to feature their visual art of choice in the Main – Teen Department for a month after the event. (Think of it like your own private opening party.)

Performers and artists will be compensated for their time and efforts. If you are a performer or visual artist and would like to be considered, please submit the following information to teenundergroundcafe@carnegielibrary.org:

  • Name
  • Performing or artist alias or name of group
  • Description of performance or art
  • Link to any recordings or documentation
  • E-mail address
  • Phone number

Additionally, the Teen Underground Cafe is going to travel all across the city for a series of after hours Open Mic Nights. The stage will be yours to feature your music, poetry, and more. And with a full PA system and back line of drums, guitars, and amps, you may meet a fellow collaborator–or even get scouted to feature more of your work at Teen Underground Cafe Presents…!

Our Open Mic Nights will be happening the following months at the following locations. Tune into our events page for more info as it comes:

  • Feburary 2014: Knoxville [Saturday, February 22, 2014 ; 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM]

The West End branch of the Carnegie Library will be closing for renovations on October 19th.  They will be closed for a few months while air conditioning and an elevator and a bunch of other cool stuff is installed.

But before they close you have one last chance to visit their Teen Lounge!  The last Lounge will be held on Tuesday, October 8th from 5-7pm.  You can play XBox games, create a craft or make your own cake pop!!  What is a cake pop you might ask.  Well, it is a delicious mini cake on  a Popsicle stick.  And you get to create your own with your favorite toppings.

Summer Movie Time

Truth be told, there is no denying summer break is slipping away. Some mean-spirited, ruthless people would even say it’s more than half over!

Even though the minutes of summer are ticking away, there are still a million things to enjoy before heading back to school. And if you count the summer solstice as the start of summer – we have really just gotten started!

Movies, movies, and more movies. Summer is the best time to catch up on movies you may have missed!

If you can manage to find a Citiparks book, check out the hundreds of free (or nearly free things to do)! My personal favorite is Cinema in the Park!

Cinema in the Park – Grandview

Each week, FREE new release movies are premiered at many parks throughout the city. Check out the calendar. You can still see a few blockbusters before the summer is out like The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyThe Hunger Games, and Jack the Giant Slayer.

Can’t make it to Cinema in the Park? Check out Teen Movie Night at CLP-Beechview! Or movies in the afternoon on Saturdays at Woods Run and Allegheny!

If you love strange, campy oddball flicks stop at Main Teen to enjoy the delights of Bad Movie Fridays!

Movie aren’t your thing? No worries! Escape the heat at the library with gaming and more. There is gaming nearly all day, every day @ Main Teen! Top off your week with Teen Gaming & Button Fridays at the West End if you want to make some of these!

What the heck is going on?

Boredom happens.  Luckily, there’s a relatively painless (and FREE!) antidote located right in your neighborhood… the Library! Whenever you feel the symptoms of boredom setting in – e.g. an uncontrollable urge to don purple pants, paint yourself green and have a massive freak-out to smash up the endless nothingness and monotony that’s hijacked life – walk, run, or jet pack to the Library ‘cos there’s probably something cool going on.

Here’s a small taste of the awesomeness going down throughout the city this week (I recommend throwing on some shades now ‘cos this stuff is red hot):

Spa Day @ the Library!

If you’re a teen who will be near the West End Library on Wednesday, stop in to get pampered!

There will be he normal Teen Lounge stuff  – Xbox, Wii, Art Corner, and snacks, but you can also make a body scrub from scratch – this sugar-based concoction will make your skin smoother if you’re into that.

You can take home easy skin care recipes to make from stuff you probably have in your own kitchen.

This could be a great Mother’s Day gift, too!

It’s from 4:30-6:30 and is FREE as usual. Check out the event page by clicking here.
